How to Zero a Thermal Scope (Without Fighting a Cold Target)

Standard paper targets are invisible to thermal at room temperature. Here's why heat-activated targets solve the zeroing problem and how to use them.

Here’s a problem every new thermal owner runs into at the range: you set up a normal paper target, dial in, and through the thermal optic you can barely see it. A paper target at ambient temperature has no heat signature. You end up squinting at a faint outline instead of a clean point of aim.

Why cold targets don’t work for thermal zeroing

Thermal optics like The Scout read heat contrast, not visible light or color. A standard bullseye printed on paper or cardboard is the same temperature as the air around it, so there’s nothing for the sensor to pick out. Some hunters try shining a heat lamp at a target or taping on a hand warmer — it works in a pinch, but it’s inconsistent and awkward to set up at a public range.

How heat-activated targets solve it

Mini Thermal Targets are air-activated adhesive targets that generate their own heat signature:

Zeroing walkthrough

  1. Peel and place a target at your intended zero distance — 100 yards is a reasonable starting point for most hog and predator hunting setups.
  2. Give it 2–5 minutes to reach full signature.
  3. Boresight first if you haven’t already, then fire a three-shot group and adjust your reticle to match point of impact.
  4. Re-zero at the start of each season, or after any hard knock to the optic.

One thing to keep in mind

Zero in conditions close to how you’ll actually hunt. Ambient temperature changes thermal contrast, so a zero session on a hot August afternoon won’t necessarily match your point of impact on a cold January night. Heat targets fix the visibility problem — they don’t replace zeroing in realistic conditions when you can.
